More than 2.4 million passengers for Brussels Airport in September

Passengers

The airport welcomed 2,444,753 passengers in September, 2.0% more than in the same month last year and a new September record. 7.6 million passengers visited our airport over the entire third quarter of 2018, an increase of 3.1% against the third quarter of 2017.

The number of local originating passengers grew by 4.3% in comparison to September of the previous year. The number of transfer passengers decreased by 9.8% against September last year, due to the reduction in the number of Brussels Airlines flights.

Cargo

Cargo volumes at Brussels Airport increased by 2.5% last month against the previous September. Over the entire third quarter, 177,330 tons of cargo were transported at Brussels Airport, an increase of 7.7% compared to the same period last year.

During the month of September, both the full-cargo segment (+ 9.5%) and belly cargo (+ 9.0%) recorded the highest growth, while integrator services declined (-4.2%) due to a number of cancelled flights at DHL.

The strong growth in cargo on board passenger aircraft is due to the new routes to Asia operated by Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines, and to Emirates’ doubling of capacity to the Gulf region. These new routes and additional capacity also account for the sharp 21% rise in imports via Brussels Airport last month, whilst exports retained the status quo in comparison to the previous September.

Flights

The number of flights in September decreased by 1.2% in comparison to September last year. Due to the decrease in passenger flights, the use of larger aircraft and improved aircraft occupancy rates, the average number of passengers per flight increased by 3% from 127 passengers per flight in September 2017 to 131 passengers per flight in September of this year.

Brussels Airport calls for further flexibility in implementation of the new European border registration system
Brussels Airport is relieved with the postponement of the registration of biometric data in the new European border registration system, the EES. Last week, waiting times at border control for non-European passengers rose to two hours at departures and more than three hours at arrivals. For departing passengers, this leads to missed flights and delays. In the past days, 600 passengers have missed their flight. The airport is therefore urging the relevant ministers to advocate at European level for further easing of the roll-out of the EES. In addition, full staffing of all border posts by the federal police and the resumption of the use of e-gates by third-country nationals as soon as possible remain crucial to ensuring acceptable waiting times.
