Renewed Brussels Airport Marathon & Half Marathon to start from Atomium

INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE

On Sunday 4th October, the 17th edition of the Brussels Airport Marathon & Half Marathon will follow a completely new course. The start underneath the Atomium and finish on the track of the King Baudouin Stadium mean the marathon gets a new iconic home base. Furthermore, the Brussels Airport Marathon will qualify as the Belgian Championship marathon in 2020. You can register from 4pm on Wednesday 26th February.

In addition to the marathon, the programme for Sunday 4th October also features the renewed Brussels Airport Half Marathon and some shorter distances. The youngest runners can enjoy the Alpro Kids Run in the Parc de Laeken. All the details about the course and exact time schedule will be announced in a couple of weeks’ time.

“The Brussels Marathon has national and international fame”, says Benoit Hellings, Councillor for Sports for the City of Brussels. “All marathon runners, be they from Brussels or elsewhere, are challenged to come and run the 42.195 kilometres through the parks and streets of Brussels. And this 2020 edition is offering some novelties to discover. Therefore, I am proud that it takes place in the capital of Europe, and that it shines a positive light on our city.”

The Brussels Airport Marathon & Half Marathon really resonate internationally. One-third of all runners do not live in Belgium. Previous editions saw participants from no fewer than 105 countries appear at the start. The start from the Atomium, probably the best-known symbol of our country, has been chosen to highlight the international character of the Brussels Airport Marathon & Half Marathon even more.

"It is with much enthusiasm that we sponsor the Brussels Airport Marathon & Half Marathon", says Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport Company. "The international scale of the event in the heart of Europe fits in with the development strategy of Brussels Airport. Just like the past two years, we hope to attract even more employees of the Brussels Airport Community to participate, mainly through the coaching programme we offer. Because we love to support professional and amateur sports."
“42.195 km that become an international calling card! From now on, Brussels has a new sporting trump card with the marathon. The painstakingly selected course will start from the Atomium and wind its way in a criss-cross pattern through our capital. The Brussels Capital Region is pleased with this international event and is looking forward to welcoming the fans of the Queen of all long-distance running competitions on 4th October next”, says Sven Gatz, Minister of Finance, Budget and the Image of Brussels in the government of the Brussels Capital Region.
