Brussels Airport Fund awards €100,000 in support for 11 sustainability projects around the airport
Selected organisations receive up to €10,000 for their project
This year, the Brussels Airport Fund, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, is supporting eleven social and sustainability projects in the area surrounding the airport with approximately €100,000. The initiatives were selected by an independent jury from a total of 43 entries. For the third year in a row, the Fund is supporting local projects that bring people together or contribute to sustainability.
In 2026, the Brussels Airport Fund will again provide funding for sustainability projects in local communities around the airport. This year, eleven organisations will receive financial support, with a total of €100,000 available. An independent jury selected the initiatives from 43 submissions following the call launched in May 2025. Each selected project will receive between €3,000 and €10,000 to implement their projects in 2026.
From sustainable community gardens to cycling lessons for vulnerable groups
After a thorough analysis of the applications received, the jury selected a mix of projects that bring people and communities together around themes such as nature, the environment and sustainable mobility.
Green spaces are being created in various cities and municipalities where residents of all ages can enjoy nature together and strengthen social ties, such as the Ter Ursulinen intergenerational vegetable garden in Brussels. The non-profit organisation Le Courtileke is implementing a neighbourhood composting initiative in Kraainem, “Komposterre”, which converts organic waste into soil nutrients in collaboration with local residents and a school. Community care and inclusion are also central in Haren and Wezemaal: the Nido vzw community allotment and the Adem vzw community garden bring people with disabilities and local residents together. A green play area is being created at De Windroos primary school in Machelen, where children can take outdoor lessons and contribute to the construction and maintenance of the space.
Sustainable mobility is another key focus. The “Vers’ailes” project in Neder-over-Heembeek offers cycling lessons and practical training, enabling women from vulnerable groups to learn how to ride a bike safely. The Brussels-based environmental organisation City To Ocean will also receive support from the Fund. It brings residents, schools and associations along the capital’s canal to remove waste from the water. Through workshops in schools, the organisation encourages young people to reflect on their use of plastics, raising awareness of the importance of water quality and biodiversity.

The Brussels Airport Fund was established in 2023. Since then, 42 sustainable initiatives have received funding ranging from €1,000 to €10,000. In total, €362,000 has been awarded to projects with a positive impact on people and nature in the area surrounding the airport. A new call for projects will be launched in May 2026 for initiatives to be implemented in 2027.
